THE NEWS
DOESN’T STOP
AT NIGHT.
Since 2019, Black Star Productions Pty Ltd has held the overnight news coverage contract awarded through the ABC tender, providing breaking news footage to the ABC, Channel 7, Channel 9 and Channel 10.
PLAY SHOWREEL
COVERING MELBOURNE
THROUGH THE NIGHT.
From 8pm until 6am, 365 days a year, our crew actively monitor emergency service scanners, news apps and established contacts to identify and pursue breaking news stories.
We liaise with Victoria Police, SES, CFA and other media teams, covering incidents across Melbourne and up to approximately 250 kilometres from the CBD.
OUR WORKFINDING THE STORY
IS HALF THE JOB.
On a busy night, calls can come in from different parts of the city. Our crew has to check the details, decide which jobs need coverage and get moving.
The job isn't just turning up with a camera. We need pictures and accurate information the newsrooms can use, while working safely and staying out of the way of emergency services.
PROFESSIONAL JUDGEMENT.
RESPECT. SAFETY.
Some nights we arrive at a scene where people have just experienced something awful. Our work includes serious crashes, fires and police incidents, so how we behave on location matters.
We follow directions at the scene, respect families and witnesses, and make sure filming doesn't interfere with emergency crews.
FROM REGIONAL NEWS
TO MELBOURNE.
Black Star Productions was founded by television camera operator and filmmaker Dean Whiston, whose career in news began in regional television with WIN and Prime in Albury-Wodonga and Cairns.
By 2012, Dean was working across Melbourne for the ABC, Seven, Nine, Ten and SBS, building the experience and industry relationships that ultimately led to the overnight news contract in 2019.
